The quick comparison
The two exams measure different things. The SAT is a college admissions test with two sections. The ATI TEAS is a readiness test for nursing and allied health programs with four sections, one of them science. Here are the official numbers from ATI and College Board.
Time per question is closer than you'd think
Divide minutes by questions and the pressure looks similar. TEAS reading gives 55 minutes for 45 questions, about 1.2 minutes each. SAT Reading and Writing gives 64 minutes for 54, also about 1.2. TEAS math is 57 minutes for 38 questions, 1.5 minutes each; SAT Math is 70 minutes for 44, about 1.6.
TEAS science is 60 minutes for 50 questions, 1.2 each, and TEAS English is the tightest at 37 minutes for 37 questions, one minute each. So the TEAS isn't faster paced overall; it is longer, with one extra subject and one very quick section at the end.

Science is the real difference
The SAT has no science section. The TEAS science section has 50 questions, the most of any section, with 44 scored. Applicants who did well on the SAT years ago often underestimate this part because it tests content knowledge, not just reasoning from a passage.
If you haven't taken a science course recently, start your prep here. Learning body systems and basic chemistry takes longer than relearning math rules.
Math: fewer tools on the TEAS
The TEAS allows only the calculator built into the exam. ATI says personal calculators, phone calculators and calculator watches are not allowed for any TEAS exam. The SAT provides a built-in calculator for the entire Math section and also lets you bring an approved calculator.
That means TEAS math rewards doing conversions, fractions and percentages by hand quickly. Practice without your own calculator so test day feels normal.

How each exam adapts and moves
The SAT is adaptive by module: each section has two modules, and the second is more or less difficult depending on how you did on the first. The TEAS sections are not described as adaptive; each section has its own clock that starts when you open it.
On the TEAS, you can move between questions inside a section until you submit it. Once you submit, you can't go back, and unused time does not carry over. Finishing reading early does not buy you minutes for math.
Scoring: no single passing score on the TEAS
ATI says there is no universal passing TEAS score. Each program sets its own minimum, and many look at section scores as well as your total. That is different from the SAT, where colleges compare you to a broad applicant pool.
Practical upshot: look up the minimum for every program you're applying to before you set a target. A score that clears one school's bar may not clear another's.
Who finds the TEAS harder
You will probably find the TEAS harder if you have been out of school a while, if science isn't your strength, or if long exams wear you down: three and a half hours of testing is a real stamina test. You may find it easier if you're comfortable with fractions by hand and you have taken anatomy recently.
The CinnaEntry bank has 664 TEAS science questions, its largest TEAS pool, plus 645 reading, 562 English and 529 math. Take the quiz on this page to see where you stand before deciding how long to study.
Frequently asked questions
Is the TEAS harder than the HESI?
They test similar skills with different formats, and schools choose which one they require. Compare the sections your program uses rather than the exams in general.
Is the TEAS test timed?
Yes. Each of the four sections is timed separately: reading 55 minutes, math 57, science 60 and English 37, for 209 minutes in total.
Can I use my own calculator on the TEAS?
No. Only the calculator built into the exam is allowed.
How many questions are on the TEAS 7?
170 questions: 45 reading, 38 math, 50 science and 37 English and language usage. 20 of them are unscored.
