TEAS maths is not advanced. There is no trigonometry, no calculus, and only light algebra. What there is: arithmetic you must do accurately, quickly, and without the mental-maths shortcuts you may be used to.
What's tested
- Numbers and algebra — fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, solving for one variable, order of operations.
- Measurement and data — unit conversion, geometry basics (perimeter, area, volume), reading charts and graphs, mean/median/mode.
The conversions to know cold
- 1 kg = 2.2 lb · 1 lb = 16 oz
- 1 inch = 2.54 cm · 1 foot = 12 in · 1 yard = 3 ft · 1 mile = 5,280 ft
- 1 L = 1,000 mL · 1 tsp = 5 mL · 1 tbsp = 15 mL · 1 cup = 8 fl oz
- °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32 · °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
- Metric prefixes: kilo 1,000 · centi 1/100 · milli 1/1,000
The formulas
- Rectangle: area = l × w, perimeter = 2(l + w)
- Triangle: area = ½ b h
- Circle: area = πr², circumference = 2πr
- Rectangular solid: volume = l × w × h
- Percent change = (new − old) / old × 100
- Proportion: cross-multiply — a/b = c/d → ad = bc
Percent change trips more people than any other single item. The denominator is always the original value. Going 40 → 50 is a 25% increase; going 50 → 40 is a 20% decrease. They are not symmetrical.
Calculator strategy
You get an on-screen four-function calculator. Two consequences worth practising: it has no parentheses, so you must apply order of operations yourself and enter the steps in the right sequence; and reaching for the mouse costs a few seconds each time, so simple arithmetic is often faster in your head.
Where marks leak
- Not converting first. If a problem mixes inches and feet, convert before you calculate.
- Answering the wrong question. It asks for the perimeter; you found the area. Re-read the final line before selecting.
- Rounding early. Round once, at the end, to whatever the question asks for.
- Leaving blanks. No penalty for guessing — never skip.
